Fianlly time for the company sponsored ski trip!: Voss is east of Bergen. It takes about 5 hrs to drive their, but 7 in a bus and 14 if the ferry isnt working cus of high winds.
in Voss we did karaoke...with some skiing thrown in..Contrary to the evidence shown, Voss is not a town full of camp people, but the pubs (that we found) are indeed rubbish. so we made our own fun.
this line is intentionally not blank
Tromso, Lyngen and Narvik: all upwards from the arctic circle!
The best trip ever!
apart from breaking my north record for the 2nd time in a month, this trip included down-driving, Steve & Sterk, the Slope of Fear and the Valley of Death, Liten Plass- possibly one of the best bars i,ve been in for quite a long time :-), and some very, very nice folks. Oh yes, and few convserations with Mack; who comes from the most northerly brewery in the world!.

skiers at the bottom of saudasvingen waiting for a lift backup to the carpark, Mia put her thumb out and predictably got the first car that came along:-)
puff pant
here's something which has been buggin me for a number of years now, and hey, ive got somewhere to put it in writing!
Trees.
Folks' -inc. Tony Blair and other equally misinformed high 'rankers'; -planting a tree, does NOT offset Co2 emmisons. So stop saying it does OK! Unless you intend burying the fucking thing at the bottom of the florida everglades just after it dies, where it will anoxically decay and also be buried by many millions of years of more sediments and finally turn into coal, then it will NOT bloody well save the environment. It instead will die, and decompose, and give back off all the CO2 it every took out of the atmosphere. (sorry to spoil the ignoroparty)
Ok, so if u can guarantee that when it dies, another one will grow there, and on and on in finitum, then i suppose you can say that you have semi-permanently reduced atmospheric CO2. But all youve really done is figure out a safe place to stash it for a while. You have also increased the earths ability to regulate CO2 fluctuations, which is quite good. Also, we shouldnt chop down indigenous natural forests, for 100,s of reasons; here are a few of the top of ma head:
1) it will alter the earths albedo (Heat in vs Heat out) and feck everything up massively - esp in the tropics.
2) The earths forests act as a dampener on climatic fluctuatation, so without them, any other climatic forcing will be amplified.
3) Trees stop topsoil erosion.
a) Top soil is good where it is. You can use it to make food for instance. It takes a very long time to form. Longer than it takes to starve anyway.
b) Topsoil is usually not very good if it is not where it is meant to be. If it is not where it is meant to be then that might mean it is being washed into the sea, cutting of the photic (light) supply to some coral reef and killing it. Or blocking up the Ganges -Bramaputra delta and fucking up what is meant to be life for millions of bangladesh peoples.
Now, ...Coral reefs dont rot. .. and they are made of CO2 (well, CO3 to be precise), and, ye cannae burn them, SO , if you really wanna get rid of CO2: Grow some coral
(Geological side issue: There is a geo-time correlation between times of ice ages and the number of coral reefs on the globe; the more coral reefs ; the more ice, which also seems to correlate with the surface area of shallow seas and the amount of orogenesis (mountain building) going on. This might be because chemical erosion of rocks increases when more mountains are being built. So what? weeell, The chemical erosion process requires: carbon, which is taken out of the atmosphere, and then ends up in the rivers and into the sea, and encourages lots of coral reefs, or so the story goes. Think its a bit conjectural tho based upon the observed correlation)
So , Yes, trees are damn good and we should replant all the forests we ever chopped down. . But they cant do Magic, and planting a fucking tree Tony Blair is not gonna get you off flying round in your personal wank -jet. Having said that, we should all feel guilty. ...
